Harvey, Fisher, Bala, Tengwall Headline PGL Elite Camp Defenders

Manheim, PA — The shutdown defenders were on site at the PGL Elite Camp. From big-time Florida commits showing out to top 2029s ready to take center stage, the PGL Elite Camp was a defensive coordinator's dream. After featuring a few of the younger defenders in our 2030 evaluations, we turn our attention to the top defensive standouts from the 2028 and 2029 classes at PGL's debut event at Spooky Nook Sports.

South Florida struck gold with [player_tooltip player_id='47674' first='Grace' last='Harvey']. Her defensive prowess has only continued to improve since she first burst onto the scene at Plymouth Whitemarsh and NXT. She is the type of player attackers do not want to see matched up against them. Harvey has a knack for wearing opponents down with her physicality, and that was on full display throughout Saturday. She spent the day matched up against some of the nation's best, with the intensity feeling less like a high school showcase and more like an NCAA playoff preview featuring two of the Sunshine State's top incoming commits. On top of it all, Harvey was one of the most vocal players during the showcase's closing Q&A session, offering tips and pointers to younger girls who will be in her shoes in the years to come.

Few defenders at Saturday's showcase looked as composed as [player_tooltip player_id='70859' first='Sadie' last='Tengwall']. A crease defender for Villa Maria and NXT, the Malvern native gave her goalkeeper a reliable presence in the 6v6 format, consistently getting her stick into shooting lanes and making life difficult for attackers around the cage. She also stood out for her poise, directing traffic and helping organize the defense as possessions developed. In open-space 1v1 situations, Tengwall showed excellent footwork and the ability to stay in front of opposing attackers. Her athleticism backed up what she showed on the field, as she finished near the top 10 in both the 5-10 fly and 5-10-5. Tengwall looks primed for a big spring and has the potential to emerge as one of Pennsylvania's premier defensive prospects. I wouldn't be surprised to see her verbally committed to a top Division I program by this time next year.

Traveling from Bronxville, New York, to attend Saturday's showcase, Ariana Bala established herself as one of the event's top defenders. Bala was particularly effective as a help defender, consistently delivering well-timed slides and doubles to take away driving lanes whenever a teammate was beaten to the cage. Her lateral quickness was evident in her 5-10-5 results, where she ranked fifth among all participants. She can quickly leave her assignment to provide support, whether on the initial slide or as the play develops through subsequent slides. A true defensive disruptor, Bala did an excellent job controlling the pace of play and limiting quick offensive possessions in the 6v6 format. She also excelled in transition, moving the ball effectively and helping initiate the offense. She has the athletic profile and skill to compete at a high-level Division I program and should draw considerable attention from college coaches.

It is truly mesmerizing to watch Phoebe Fisher play defense. A New York product who plays her club lacrosse with Connecticut-based Primetime, Fisher reminds me of [player_tooltip player_id='47674' first='Grace' last='Harvey'], using a similar frame and physicality to wear down her assignment. She was one of the better defenders I've seen in the two-woman game, showing she can fight through a screen to stay with her original assignment or switch onto the screener. Her defensive IQ stands out in how quickly she reads the action and takes away options. Fisher is equally tough in open space and pushes the field after scooping up ground balls, showcasing an extended, one-handed cradle in transition. She has the tools to draw early interest from a big-time Division I program.

A Hill School (Pa.) and PA Roar product who made the short trip from Wyomissing for Saturday's event, [player_tooltip player_id='73253' first='Harper' last='Slotkin'] is an intriguing defensive prospect. She catches your eye early with the size and build of a college defender. Her foot speed is still catching up to her frame, but there is plenty to like about the Pennsylvania 2029. Slotkin was gritty on ground balls Saturday, using her size to establish position in the 1v1 drill against strong competition. She is a solid feeder in transition, keeping her head up and making smart decisions with the ball. Slotkin has shown promising flashes as a draw taker this summer, adding another dimension to her versatile profile. Surrounded by blue-chip talent at The Hill School, she has an excellent environment to continue developing her game.

Few defenders brought the edge [player_tooltip player_id='73303' first='Ellie' last='Dwyer'] did Saturday. A defender for Academy of Notre Dame de Namur and Dynasty Elite, the Paoli native is a gritty 1v1 presence who doesn't let her size dictate the matchup. She is more than willing to take on bigger attackers, using her positioning and stick work to disrupt their drives and create turnovers. I watched her match up against a Princeton commit up top, forcing her away from the action and making her work for every inch. Dwyer also makes her presence felt in transition, vacuuming up ground balls and pushing the field with purpose. She covers ground quickly in the clear and is tough to contain in open space, giving her potential to transition to defensive midfield or midfield at the next level. A product of one of Pennsylvania's top private programs, Dwyer looks ready to make a name for herself this spring.

Yorktown has produced a steady pipeline of high-level attackers in recent seasons, but this year, its standout may be a defender in Peyton Regan. A high-IQ defender who plays with plenty of physicality, Regan flies around the field, recognizing when to step up and provide help while keeping the defense organized. She is particularly effective in the two-woman game, where she can blow up a screen before the offense has a chance to capitalize. Regan actively seeks contact, and it's fun to watch attackers try to take topside on her, only to be forced uncomfortably wide and away from the action. She has a knack for making life difficult for opposing attackers and disrupting offensive sets before they develop. She is another name who will be off the board early next September. Coaches are going to love her physicality and willingness to do the dirty work defensively.

A Tappan, New York, product who plays her club lacrosse with Connecticut-based Primetime, Savvy Guinto was an electrifying player to watch Saturday. Her combine numbers alone turned heads: she finished second in the broad jump, third in the 5-10-5, fourth in the 30-10 fly, and seventh in the 5-10 fly across all age groups. She followed that up with an equally impressive afternoon in game settings. Guinto is a true transition catalyst, winning ground balls and quickly pushing the field. She is also a smooth ball carrier who is difficult to match up with in open space and can initiate a dodge from virtually anywhere on the field. Defensively, she closes down the 8-meter arc aggressively, challenging attackers driving toward the cage. Guinto has the athletic profile to attract significant interest from high-level Division I programs, and I don't expect her recruitment to last long once September 2027 arrives.
