One of my favorite defenders to watch on Monday was Maryland’s Faith Canty, whose pedigree at Maryvale Prep, one of the nation’s top programs, speaks for itself. At 5’6″ and extremely athletic, Canty uses her sharp instincts to wreak havoc in the passing lanes. I was most impressed with her closeout speed and relentless effort on 8-meter attempts. She does a great job getting her stick into the shooting lane and making shooters earn every inch, getting a piece of multiple attempts to take away potential goals on Monday. Canty is sound defensively and welcomes 1v1 matchups in space. Surrounded by fellow blue-chip talent at one of the country’s top high school and club programs, she is a name to keep an eye on. She is only scratching the surface.

Faith Canty is an incredibly well-rounded defender and stood out as such at the Rize. Her 1v1 will lock girls up and force them to give the ball away. She uses her size and wingspan well, knocking down passes and deterring drives when she is off-ball. Canty also cuts quickly on the clear and uses her speed to transition the ball. If there is no open next pass, she is confident carrying it all the way downfield and does so, leaving the ride behind her.
