Class of 2028: Versatile Defensive Players

The Class of 2028 has no shortage of versatile defensive talent, and these five stood out time and time again this summer. While some are strictly defenders and some are defensive midfielders, each has the defensive ability, athleticism, and versatility that could translate into a high value defensive midfield role at the next level.    Bruschi has competed at the varsity level since eighth grade as both a defender and midfielder, an impressive accomplishment playing in New York. She is comfortable in man-to-man and zone defenses and has earned the responsibility of playing backer, a role that speaks to her IQ, communication, and reliability. Bruschi consistently gets sticks on 8-meter shots, creates knockdowns, and turns checks into immediate ground ball opportunities. Her size, strength, and reach make her extremely disruptive in 1v1 matchups, and she has shown all summer that she can hold her own against high-level offensive players. Physical, vocal, and consistent, Bruschi makes opponents work for everything.     Mecca is a trustworthy, high-IQ defender every defensive unit needs. She is composed, communicates constantly, and understands exactly where she needs to be within both man and zone defenses. Her slides are well timed, and her overall defensive awareness consistently puts her in position to make plays. One of the most unique parts of Mecca's game is her ability, as a natural righty, to defend with her left hand and still successfully throw checks, giving her another tool in 1v1 situations. Add in her experience at midfield and on the draw circle, and Mecca brings an impressive level of versatility to the field.     Harvey is a gritty defender who thrives in 1v1 situations and has a knack for creating turnovers. She is comfortable making risky decisions that often turn in her favor, such as jumping passing lanes and successfully coming away with possession. Harvey also delivers clean, well-timed checks, including from behind when ball carriers least expect it. She uses both hands effectively, competes hard on the draw circle, and is a ground ball machine who consistently finds ways to regain possession.     Fontaine is a fundamentally sound defender whose speed and transition ability immediately separate her. She is disruptive defensively, constantly bothering attackers with her stick, but the clear is where she can completely change a possession. Fontaine takes off in transition with confidence, speed, and purpose, using quick changes of direction to evade pressure and create an efficient path upfield.     Gersmehl brings size, physicality, and impressive versatility to the defensive end. She positions herself well, refuses to let attackers overpower her, and is especially effective defending around “X” and behind the cage. What makes Gersmehl particularly intriguing is how many different places she can impact a game. She also plays midfield at her high school and has shown legitimate ability on the offensive end, making her someone who could potentially take on an expanded midfield role at the next level. Whether she's defending low, playing through the midfield, or helping create offense, Gersmehl finds a way to contribute.
