While attackers often receive much of the attention, strong defensive play can completely change the outcome of a game. The Class of 2028 featured several defenders who consistently disrupted offenses, forced turnovers, and made life difficult for opposing attackers throughout Lacrosse Masters in Farmington, Connecticut. Whether through strong 1v1 defense, communication, or high lacrosse IQ, these players stood out on the defensive end.

Marin Gusrafson showed strong defensive awareness and constantly stayed engaged off-ball. Her communication and ability to start clears were noticeable strengths when watching her play. Breaking out fast and moving the ball up field with speed is what stood out the most. In addition to being a solid on-ball defender, her off-ball defense was especially impressive. She stayed tight to cutters and got on their hands quickly, something that was noticeable even from the stands.

Allison Zaranek was one of the most complete defenders I watched throughout the weekend. Her combination of footwork, awareness, and team defense made a major impact whenever she was on the field. She moves extremely well laterally, allowing her to stay in front of attackers while also being in position to play good help defense. Allison was always aware of where her fellow defenders were and what they needed from her, consistently putting herself in position to help cause turnovers. Her defensive IQ and ability to read plays before they developed made her a defender that offenses had to account for.

Emily McDermott brought toughness and communication to the defensive end. It was very evident that she wanted to get the ball back for her teammates, constantly putting herself in position to disrupt offenses. She was willing to go after checks and get in passing lanes while always staying big in hopes of creating a knockdown or interception. Emily played with a gritty mindset and was consistently active throughout possessions, making life difficult for opposing attackers.

Lena Taylor played a disciplined defensive game throughout the event. She tracked cutters well and rarely seemed out of position, consistently putting herself in the right spot defensively. Lena stayed composed and did not overcommit, allowing her to disrupt plays before they developed. Her positioning and awareness made her a reliable presence on the defensive end.

What really stood out about Pratt was her ability to impact the game outside of just playing defense. She showed her athleticism with a coast-to-coast run that immediately caught my attention and proved she can turn defense into offense quickly. She also moved the ball well and made good passes in transition, helping keep the pace moving. Players who can defend, push transition, and contribute offensively are always valuable, and Pratt showed that she can affect the game in multiple ways. Her athleticism, defensive presence, and ability to play in transition make her an uncommitted 2027 prospect worth keeping an eye on.
