Montana State Championship Game: Jackson Hole vs. Northwest

On Sunday, May 17, the Montana High School Lacrosse Association (MHSLA) girls' championship brought together two of the league's top teams: undefeated Jackson Hole (Wyo.) and Northwest (Mont.). With Jackson chasing its third straight state title and Northwest on their heels, the atmosphere was buzzing with intensity from the opening draw.   Jackson controlled the pace early, building a 4–0 lead through three quarters. Their quick ball movement, defensive pressure, and ability to work in transition or settle into their sets gave them command of the game from the start. Northwest didn't go down easily, putting together a fourth-quarter push with three unanswered goals that forced Jackson to lock in defensively in the final minutes. Jackson held strong, securing their three‑peat with a final score of 4–3.    Petro scored two goals, including Northwest's first of the game, kick‑starting their fourth-quarter push. The best way to describe her is pure athleticism. She is a force to be reckoned with in any spot on the field. Petro is a staple in Northwest's defense, causing turnovers and locking down 1v1 matchups with confidence and physicality. Her stick skills may be the most impressive part of her game, with excellent ball control that allows her to protect possession and move the ball quickly under pressure.     Toren made a major impact for Northwest, especially at the draw. As their main draw taker, she won several key draws in the fourth quarter that led directly to offensive movement and a crucial goal during their late push. Toren also showed strong defensive instincts, reading the field well, jumping passing lanes, and creating turnovers with smart anticipation. Her ability to both generate possessions and disrupt them made her one of Northwest's most important two‑way players.      Witherite set the tone early for Jackson Hole, opening the game with a composed free position finish that gave her team immediate momentum. She plays with a calm, controlled presence, using her speed and field awareness to break pressure and move the ball with purpose. Whether pushing in transition or settling into the offensive set, Witherite consistently made smart decisions that helped Jackson maintain control. Her poise and ability to create a steady offensive flow made her one of Jackson's most impactful players in the championship matchup.     Mallen is a crafty scoring threat who thrives on slipping into space before the defense even realizes she's moved. Throughout the game, she repeatedly found weak spots in Northwest's defense, getting open for clean touches and turning them into quick, high‑quality chances. Her timing was sharp all afternoon, beating her defender to the cage and finishing with confident, driven shots. Mallen's movement and ability to create separation were key pieces of Jackson Hole's early offensive game, making her one of their most reliable players in the matchup.     Bosch was the backbone of Jackson Hole's defensive unit, setting the tone with good positioning and smart footwork. She consistently shut down Northwest's early transition attempts, forcing them to slow the ball and work through pressure. Her ability to stop cutters and slow momentum made her one of the most disruptive defenders on the field. She was a major reason Northwest struggled to create clean looks until their late push.
